Noni Juice and Pregnancy

We are often asked if taking Noni during pregnancy is safe or advisable. As far as we can ascertain, there have been no scientific or clinical studies on taking Noni during pregnancy. There is plenty of anecdotal evidence both in favour of taking Noni during pregnancy and against the practice, so what is the answer? If you are pregnant and do your research on the internet, you’re just as likely to be as confused at the end as when you started.

Noni History: Noni is one of a number of medicinal plants that have been widely used in Asia and the Pacific for thousands of years. Pre-European Polynesian people generally enjoyed good health, without the influence of many “western” type diseases and illnesses, so in pre-European times, Noni was mainly used for problems associated with pregnancy, childbirth and aging, as well as for first-aid.

Today, doctors train for many years in Universities to gain the knowledge required to diagnose illness and treat people, but in every society there has always been the select few who learn the secret knowledge that enables them to become healers. Ancient healers were considered wise in matters of spirituality, philosophy, education and medicine. The practice of healing was considered a sacred occupation and was guarded from common use.

Unfortunately little is known today about the full range of herbal medicine used by the people of Polynesia. Much of the accumulated wisdom associated with local medicine was passed on by word of mouth for young apprentices to carry on. As Western diseases became epidemics and swept through the region, much valuable knowledge died with the experts who held it before they could pass it on.

Should I take Noni When Pregnant or Breastfeeding? Until scientific or clinical studies can prove conclusively that Noni is safe to take during pregnancy, the answer to this question has to be a matter of common sense. If a daily dose of Noni has been a part of your health maintenance for some time, and your body is accustomed to it, then after consulting with your health professional, we would recommend you continue.

If, however, you are new to Noni and, recognizing its health benefits, want to begin taking it during pregnancy, we would recommend waiting the short time until after your baby is born before you begin.

Noni is extremely beneficial to your digestive system in that it loosens the bowels and is effective in eliminating waste from the intestines. This can result in very loose bowel motions, and on the rare occasion can result in an upset stomach in some people - not a good situation if you are pregnant.

The wellbeing of your unborn child is paramount in deciding what your oral intake is during pregnancy. The lifelong benefits of taking Noni juice will not suffer from a short “sabbatical” of abstinence during pregnancy.

Noni has so many advantageous health properties that we can not afford to ignore the significant benefits that taking a daily dose gives our bodies, not only for specific ailments, but for general health management and as a preventative measure.

This article should not be seen as a substitute for seeking medical advice from a health professional. If in doubt at all, please consult your GP or other competent medical professional.

Well, I’m still confused. Can you take it while breastfeeding? Will it make for a strong baby?

Hi Melanie

Thank you for your comment on our Blog. Noni Juice is indeed safe to take whilst breastfeeding. Your baby will soon let you know if they disapprove of whatever you are ingesting while you are breastfeeding.

Adults taking Noni Juice notice much looser bowels movements as the juice works to enhance the digestive system and eliminate toxins from the body. If your baby’s motions become too loose, simply cut back on the daily dose you are taking. A daily does of Noni juice will improve your energy levels and get you back to optimum health faster after the birth process, but we recommend that you listen to your instincts. If your baby has no reaction to you including Noni Juice in your diet, keep taking it. If, however, your baby seems unsettled or experiences loose bowel movements once you start to take Noni, it is recommended that you wait until you finish breastfeeding before you start taking it regularly.

I have been taking Tahitian Noni Juice for over a month now. I never experienced any adverse reaction from it. We are now about a month away from an embryo transfer (IVF cycle). If I read your advice above corectly, considering my body is used to it, I guess it should be safe to take during pregnancy?

Hi Ana

Yes, you will be fine with continuing to take Noni during your IVF treatment and pregnancy. We wish you all the very best with your treatment.

Hi I am 37wks pregnant and I have been taking acai, goji, and mangosteen juices through my pregnancy from whole food stores, and I just bought a bottle of noni juice is that ok to take or should I just wait until I have the baby

Lisa

Hi Lisa

You only have 3 weeks to go (hopefully!!) until your baby is born, so I would advise you wait until after the birth. Taking Noni regularly will offer you life-long benefits, so a wait of 3 weeks is neither here nor there. As described in the article above, taking Noni daily will help your digestive process, so it is wise to be cautious at this stage in your pregnancy.

Noni is fine to take if you are contemplating breast feeding - in fact it is a very energy-boosting tonic. If you notice the bowel movements of your baby becoming too loose, just cut back on your daily dose until you feel comfortable. Listen to your body - it will be your guide on how much to take daily.

Hope all goes well with the birth.

Going by your above article i guess the taking of Noni Juice is not ideal for me as a pregnant woman in my 20wk. Though it was just introduced to me by a relative, i have never heard or come across it before now. Am sending this so as to be very careful of what i take ‘cos i have suffered series of miscarriages.

Hi Mrs Margaret

Thank you for your comment. If you have suffered miscarriages in the past, you are wise to be cautious about whatever you eat or drink, and you will obviously need to take care of your body physically too.

Once baby is born, taking a daily dose of Noni Juice will assist with the return of your energy levels, and help boost your immune system.

We wish you all the best for a successful pregnancy and birth.

okay I am 5 wk in my pregnancy and I was taking noni 3 years ago and it helped me in my real life now I want to start taking againg knowing the benefits noni have so far as body getting use to the noni. Will it be safe to star again in my situation.

Hi Diana

Congratulations on your pregnancy. If it is 3 years since you took Noni Juice, I would start again at about 10ml per day, building up to the recommended dose of 30ml per day over a period of 2 weeks. If you experience any side effects, continue at the lower dose or discontinue altogether until after your pregnancy. Your body will tell you if you need more or less.

To gain the best benefit from Noni Juice, it should be taken about 30 minutes before food in the morning.

Do not take this while pregnant. Noni Juice is known all over as an abortion supplement. I did not know this and drank a little everyday during my first pregnancy. My son was born and they said he stopped growing when he was inside me. He also had to spend weeks in the NICU with low blood sugar. My second pregnancy I did not drink the juice(the only difference between the two) and my baby was perfectly healthy. I have been searching the internet and have found other women who drank Noni Juice and the same thing happened to them and their babies. However, their babies stopped growing and did not survive. Do not drink this stuff it is not worth it.

Hi Misty
Thank you for your comments. We think our article on taking Noni juice whilst pregnant is very balanced and advises caution during pregnancy unless the mother-to-be is a long time Noni taker.

We don’t agree with your view point - if Noni was as dangerous to an unborn child as you suppose, it would attract the attention of health authorities the world over and carry a health warning. There are many factors that can influence the tragic miscarriage of an unborn child.

Is is safe to drink noni juice whilst breatfeeding?

Hi,
I am 36 years old and Im expecting my fourth child. I am 1 month along and I am diabetic. I have used Noni in order to control my glucose level, but I worry that it might be harmful to the baby I am expecting. If someone could please commment back with some type of advice? Thank you

Hi Antonia

Thank you for your enquiry. Congratulations on your pregnancy, and I’m assuming that you have read the article on our website regarding Noni juice and pregnancy, and that your query has come from there.

We recommend that if you have been taking Noni before your pregnancy and your body is accustomed to it, to continue taking it, but not to start taking Noni juice for the first time during a pregnancy. If in doubt, you should consult your GP.

All the best
Judith Madsen
