Chemistry:
Noni is high in Potassium (K). Potassium is associated with many health benefits and promotes healthy heart rhythm, muscular contraction, nerve function, energy production, and fluid and electrolyte balance in the body.
Noni is a living biochemical factory that produces many biologically active and useful chemical compounds, a list that grows each year as researchers refine their focus. Noni has good antioxidant levels that are similar to green tea.
Alkaloids have a pharmacological effect on humans and other animals, and many alkaloids are found in Noni.
Anthraquinones are an important group of phytochemicals found in Noni. Damnacanthal is one of the most important anthraquinones found in Noni and a number of promising new anthraquinones have been discovered recently.
Noni contains a number of useful glycosides that show promise in cancer prevention. The anti-cancer medical properties of glycosides from Noni include free radical scavenging activity. Lignans and neolignans comprise a large group of natural products found in many plants, Noni being one of them. Lignans are very powerful antioxidants which work throughout the human body to scavenge free radicals which can damage tissue and are thought to play a role in the pathology of many diseases.
Polysaccharides are relatively complex carbohydrates. Common polysaccharides in plants include cellulose, pectin and starches and they are sometimes referred to as long-chain sugars – these are found in ripe Noni fruit and Noni juice. Noni contains a polysaccharide-rich substance (noni-ppt), which in experiments on mice has shown to be immuno-stimulatory, immuno-modulatory, anti-bacterial, anti-tumour and anti-cancer.
Scopoletin has wide medical implications. It is a coumarin found in ripe Noni fruit and Noni juice. Scopoletin is known to regulate blood pressure, is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, histamine-inhibiting, and used for arthritic conditions, allergies, sleep disorders, migraine headaches, depression and Alzheimer’s Disease. Research at the University of Hawaii recently confirmed that after ingesting Noni, scopoletin levels in the human bloodstream increased measurably. Scopoletin regulates the hormone serotonin which helps reduce anxiety and depression.
Amino Acids:
Noni juice has 17 Amino acids, 3 of which will help your body’s immune system fight ill health.
Serine has sugar-producing qualities, and is very reactive in the body. It is highly concentrated in all cell membranes, aiding in the production of immunoglobulin and antibodies.
Arginine plays an important role in cell division, the healing of wounds, removing ammonia from the body, immune function, and the release of hormones.
Methionin is a component of various endorphins responsible for pain relief and well-being, and is essential in the development of the thymus gland for a healthy immune system in foetuses and little children.
Vitamins:
Vitamin A deficiency causes damage to the naturally protective mucous membrane barrier of the respiratory tract, and it’s thought that bacteria and viruses take advantage of that damage. Even a moderate deficiency of Vitamin A can weaken the immune defences of a child’s respiratory tract.
There is general agreement in the medical community that Vitamin C is vital to the production of white blood cells, the foot soldiers of your immune system. One study has shown that levels of Vitamin C don’t have to be very low, even in otherwise healthy people between ages 25 and 43, to cause a decline in immune function.
The story on vitamin E and immunity is long and positive. For years, researchers have been finding dramatic immune-enhancing effects using vitamin E supplements, including increased levels of interferon and interleukin. Both of these biochemicals are produced by the immune system to fight infection.
Noni contains Vitamins A, C & E.
Noni and Healing:
Today, doctors train for many years in Universities to gain the knowledge required to diagnose illness and treat people, but in every society there has always been the select few who learn the secret knowledge that enables them to become healers. Ancient healers were considered wise in matters of spirituality, philosophy, education and medicine. The practice of healing was considered a sacred occupation and was guarded from common use.
The Noni plant has been widely used for thousands of years by healers in ancient cultures around the world. Most of what we know about the traditional uses of Noni has been passed down verbally from generation to generation. Noni became well known worldwide in the 1980’s when scientists began to hear of its healing properties and started conducting research on this amazing fruit.
Scientific evidence of the healing properties and benefits of taking Noni are continually accumulating, and the phytochemicals in Noni are being widely examined for their ability to provide health benefits. Exaggerated health claims of Noni as a “cure all” for every illness damages the credibility of Noni in general. But there is no doubt that many scientific studies have evidence that Noni, taken as a supplement, along with a healthy lifestyle and diet can enhance the health of most people.
